Landmarks for the 21st Century

‘LANDMARKS’ is a temporary photographic exhibition compiled from five previous shows mounted by the J. Paul Getty Museum. Headed by Vinod Daniel and curated by Los Angeles-based Dr Mahasti Afshar, the exhibition was organized by the Australian Museum as part of an official entry for the 2000 Olympic Arts Festival in Sydney.

It comprised 100 extraordinary photographs - taken by young amateurs from six vibrant global cities - of ‘landmarks’ that illustrated their personal connection to where they live.

As Senior Designer I was involved from concept stage through to design, documentation and project management. Given an open brief with regards its location within the Australian Museum I designed blade walling that was stridently independent to the existing heritage architecture, allowing it an powerful autonomous character. Evocative photographers’ quotes ran the length of the new fixtures, and independent continuous lighting, exhilarating contemporary music and an overlay of the photographers’ voices gave the exhibition its own memorable ‘environment’.
